Monsoon Season is upon us, and there are many dangers to take into account when attempting to drive during severe weather. Many don’t think about being prepared until the time arrives and it’s too late. Knowing what to do if caught out on the highway during one these storms could potentially save your life.

Check out these six driving tips to keep safe during this monsoon season!

1. Be Aware

Pay attention to weather alerts and watch for potential storms. If at all possible, stay home and off the roads if there is a severe storm occurring.

2. Turn Your Headlights On

If you get caught in a storm, make sure your headlights are turned on to increase visibility. Remember, if you are having trouble seeing, so are the cars around you.

3. Pull Over

If conditions are so severe that you can’t see in front of you due to rain, wind or dust, pull over to the right as soon as you can. Incase of powerful wind, turn off the car and set your parking break. Keep your feet off the break pedal to ensure your car does not move.

4. Slow Down

After the rain has stopped, or if you are just driving in rain in general, be sure to go slow. If you see a big puddle of water, try to avoid it at all costs. Water on the road may appear deeper than it looks, causing your tires to lose traction and hydroplane. To ensure your safety, as well as the safety of others, always slow down and be cautious.

5. Pay Attention to Hazard Signs

Keep on the lookout for signs like “Road Closed Due to Flooding” . If you see a significant body of water on the road, DO NOT try to cross it. Keep in mind that you can lose control of your car in just six inches of water. Not paying attention to these barriers can not only damage property, but can also threaten your life.

6. If Stalled in Water, Call 911

If you accidentally drive your car through a flooded area and it becomes stalled, DO NOT stay inside the vehicle. If the water is shallow enough, get to dry land and find shelter. If the water is deep, call 911 and climb on top of the roof of your car. Pay attention and avoid debris, and fast currents. Don’t panic, and be very specific about your location so rescue workers can get to you ASAP.

According to the National Weather Service, nearly half of all flood fatalities are vehicle related. Be smart and be cautious this monsoon season. Keep these six steps in mind so you can be prepared!
