Reasons Why You Need to Change Your Oil This Summer

It is extremely important to get your oil changed during the summer. Gas prices always seem to get higher during the warmer months, and this always seems to be the time when road trips happen. The winter blend of oil is different from the summer blend and it takes time to change that out. Regular oil changes help to get the most out of your vehicle. Below are some guidelines to help maximize the benefit from your oil changes over summer.

Three months or 3,000 miles?

A common theory is that you need to change your oil every 3,000 miles. However, there is actually no truth to this. 

Most owner’s manuals will tell you to change your oil every six months and when you reach five to seven thousands miles. If you are driving more often under bad weather it is good to change it more often than this. It really just depends on your engine and the type of oil you use. 

All bottled oils come with additive packages already included from the refinery. These additives help neutralize the acids that are harmful to the metal surfaces. These packages are used with the first 500 to 1,000 miles of driving, but after that, it’s just a matter of time before these bad particles effect your car.

There isn’t much of a difference between getting your oil changed at 3,000 or 5,000 miles, so we would recommend waiting or referring to your owner’s manual recommendations.

Best Grade of Oil

Your owner’s manual will also tell you what the best type of oil for your engine is.  A general rule of thumb is to get a thicker grade oil during the summer. Engines need this thicker oil because the summer heat affects the oil by thinning it out. When it gets colder, the oil needs to be switched back to a lighter oil. This will also help preserve gas mileage in the winter.
