Ways to Avoid Texting and Driving

Did you know if you’re driving at 55 MPH, you will travel the length of a football field in five seconds? A football field! Now imagine glancing down at your phone for just five seconds; can you imagine how much damage could happen in that length of time?

Many people forget that driving is actually a privilege that needs to be taken with full responsibility. If you are distracted while driving, you not only are risking your own life, but the lives of others as well.

In fact, some studies have shown that texting and driving is even more dangerous than drinking and driving. You are so distracted when texting and driving that you are 23 times more likely to get in a fatal crash. This a growing epidemic.

The next time you get behind the wheel, please consider practicing these tips:

1. Focus Entirely On the Road

Really try to focus on the road and don't let anything distract you. Use your mirrors, and try not to play with the radio. You always have to be aware while driving because an accident could happen in an instant.

2. Keep Your Cellphone Out of Reach

If you have problems staying off your phone, put it out of reach! Either hide it in your bag, or put it in the backseat. This will decrease your temptation to check it.

3. Turn Your Phone Off

One of the best ways to avoid texting and driving is to simply turn off your phone. A phone call or text message can always wait, do not put your life and the lives of others in danger!

4. Choose Someone to Text for You

If you are driving with passengers in the car and absolutely have to answer a message on your phone, designate one of your passengers to reply. This will ensure your safety as well as the safety of your passengers.

5. Download Restricting Apps

There are several awesome Apps available right now like Drive Off, that immediately lock your phone while your driving. Some lock your phone if you're going over 10 MPH. This App can eliminate the risk of distraction significantly.

6. Pull Over

If it is an absolute emergency, and you have to answer your phone or reply to a text, pull to the side of the road.

7. Be Cautious of Hands-Free Devices

Sometimes Bluetooth or other hands-free devices can be distracting to a driver, despite having his or her eyes on the road. These devices often create an illusion of safety that isn't actually there.

If you do use a hands-free device in your car, use it with caution and make sure you’re always paying attention to the road.
