How to Easily Replace Your Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are a critical component of your car’s safety system. If your wipers are not working properly, it may be difficult to see the road or other hazards when it downpours during our monsoon season. Faulty wiper blades can be ineffective and even smear your windshield, potentially creating visibility issues. Some simple, regular maintenance can help ensure your wiper blades are in good shape.

Inspect Your Wipers Regularly

When you’re behind the wheel, nothing is more crucial than good visibility. But most drivers usually wait too long to replace their wipers. Wipers should be replaced every six months, especially if you park outside and you live in Arizona.

How to Replace Your Wiper Blades

Your windshield wiper assembly consists of three basic parts: the lower wiper arm that protrudes up from the cowl, the blade that attaches to the wiper arm and the rubber refill that wipes the glass. The thin rubber refill is the part that eventually breaks down from extreme weather conditions, dust and dirt. Most often you can just replace the wiper refill.

However, the blade can also become weak and lose its tension against the glass or even bend slightly. If the entire blade isn’t making contact with the windshield replace the entire blade.

Replacing your wiper blades is actually a pretty easy task. If you want to do it yourself, follow these simple steps:

  • Determine the blade size. Measure the wiper blade length or check your car’s owner’s manual for the correct blade size.
  • Take off the old wiper blades. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield and press the small tab on the underside of the wiper where it meets the wiper arm. Slide the wiper blade off the arm by pulling downward.
  • Put the new wiper blades on. Pull the wiper blade tight onto the arm. You will hear a clicking sound when it locks into place. Lower the arm slowly back onto the windshield and repeat this process on the other wiper arm.
  • Test them out. Run the wipers to see if they are working properly. It’s better to do it now instead of finding out they aren’t installed correctly during the middle of a downpour.

Taking these simple steps can help make sure your wipers are working efficiently and maximize your visibility for safer driving.
